Thermage is a nonablative radiofrequency (RF) device used for skin rejuvenation. It uses monopolar RF energy to heat the underlying skin and tighten it without damaging the epidermis. It is commonly used for treating rhytids (wrinkles) on the face, including the periorbital region and lower face. It has also shown improvements in cellulite of the buttocks and thigh regions. Thermacool TC is considered an effective and safe alternative for treating mild skin laxity. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted clearance in 2006 for the treatment of periorbital rhytids (wrinkles around the eyes) and facial laxity.
Thermal collagen contraction can be applied to the skin for use in aesthetic rejuvenation, restoring skin laxity and aging symptoms. Collagen fibers consist of triple helix strands of protein containing strong hydrogen bonds that deteriorate over the course of several years. The application of thermal energy over a period of time contracts, compresses, and thickens the collagen fibers. An ideal heat of 571C to 611C is adjusted for collagen shrinkage, with a time depending on the type and area of skin applied. The dermal collagen fibers are detected at a depth of 1 to 2 mm for treatment of skin laxity.
